Citric acid is the unsung hero of the low-waste cleaning cabinet. Naturally found in citrus fruits, this powerful but simple ingredient is especially great at dissolving hard-water buildup, mineral deposits, soap scum, and limescale. It can help make glass sparkle, freshen appliances, clean faucets and showerheads, and tackle those stubborn white crusty deposits that regular cleaners struggle with. It’s also a key ingredient in bath bombs, dishwasher and laundry formulations, and countless food and beverage applications. A little goes a long way—and one simple powder can replace a surprising number of specialty products.

Recipes:
🚿 1. Hard-Water & Shower Spray
Best for: shower doors, faucets, sinks, and mineral buildup
1 cup warm water
2 tbsp citric acid
1 tsp castile soap
Mix in a spray bottle and shake gently. Spray onto mineral buildup, let sit for 5–10 minutes, scrub, and rinse well.
⚠️ Don't use on marble, natural stone, or other acid-sensitive surfaces.
🫧 2. Fizzy Toilet Cleaner
Best for: freshening and tackling mineral buildup
½ cup baking soda
¼ cup citric acid
1 tbsp liquid castile soap
Enough water to make a damp, moldable mixture
Combine dry ingredients, then slowly add just enough water to hold everything together. Press into molds or make small tablets and let dry completely.
Drop one into the toilet, let fizz for several minutes, scrub, and flush.
🧺 3. Dishwasher Descaling Powder
Best for: mineral buildup and hard-water deposits
½ cup citric acid
That's it! 😂
With the dishwasher empty, sprinkle the citric acid across the bottom and run a hot cleaning cycle. Check your dishwasher manufacturer's instructions first, since appliance recommendations vary.
